The municipal archives are the archives produced by the town hall and the municipal services, and the service which preserves and communicates them to the public.
The archives are open to everyone. An ID is required to register. The reader is welcomed and advised in his research by the staff of the archives. The collection is avaible for consultation, in a reading room, under the conditions of archives or administrative documents provision as defined by the laws.
The municipal collection
Antique archives
They are made of 843 documents in bundles of parchments, papers or registers. The oldest, a parchment sealed with a lead bull of the lords of Fos, dates back to 1226. The parish registers offer a good continuity from the XVIIth century.
Modern archives
They begin in 1790 with the constitution of the first municipality born with the Revolution and cover the very rich revolutionary period as well as the century and a half following, that is to say until 1940. There are among other things censuses and register of births, marriages, and deaths wich are essential statistics for the study of the population and families.
Contemporary archives
They regularly receive documents, whatever their media, which are prepared or received in the various departments: deliberations, decrees, building permits, building plans budgets, etc.

- Old photographs and postcards
- Posters, maps and plans of Martigues and its region
- Sound archives
- Library of books and old newspapers whose main themes are: Martigues, Provence and its history.
Opening hours
Opening Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
By appointment: Monday to Wednesday.
Group receptions on Fridays
Closed Monday following the Saint Pierre day.
